The cinnamon roll I was eating almost came out of my nose when I heard the following dialogue from a local teleserye let’s just call Asian Treasures:
Alalay: Di po ako makatawag. Wala pong signal sa lugar na ‘to. (I can’t make a call. There is no phone signal here.)
Boss aka Marvin Agustin: Ayan kasi. Di ka kasi naka-Smart. (That’s what you get from not using Smart.)
Honestly, I can’t remember the exact dialogue but basically, it was something to that effect. Marvin Agustin, a local celebrity who has been endorsing the mobile phone company, just made an obvious marketing move. The delivery was so seamless that, if it weren’t in an action adventure TV show, his line could have been a great punch line in a comedy. Still it was a good laugh and a pleasant distraction from a thumb-numbing channel surfing.
Before the commercial, I was wondering if it was an uncalled for promotion from the side of Marvin Agustin. However, before the commercial break, I saw that the show is being sponsored by the mobile phone company. The dialogue, most likely, was a part of the script and not just an adlib.
Usually, if one wants to sell something, they would break the viewers’ “non critical mindset”. Think of E.T. and how the kid Elliott lured the alien by using Reese’s pieces or how stars create a name for their sponsors by using their products during shows, appearances, etc. The dialogue in Asian Treasures, however, was so obvious, tacky, and downright funny.
sunday horror

Drivel is coming out of the idiot box.
I seriously cannot bear hearing Boy Abunda’s phony sympathetic voice, Cristy Fermin’s crude, unsubstantial reasoning, and Kris Aquino’s would be icky confessions. It is Sunday and the only noise I can ever hear of in the house is the latest buzz in Philippine show business.
My speakers have gone bonkers so nothing’s going to spare me from them. Eeeeek. The horror.

Amazing Race Asia premiered yesterday. Being a sucker of adventure travel shows, I was glued to my seat for almost an hour, making judgments about the contestants and fervently rooting for the two Filipino teams to win.
First stop was Malaysia. The two Filipino teams finished second and fourth during that leg of the race. Ernie and Jeena are extremely athletic. Aubrey and Jack, on the other hand, are irritatingly kikay but well, they did well during the team tasks.
I wonder if the Philippines is included in their pit stop. =) Haay. I am going to watch it every week. I have found another reason to watch the idiot box aside from Dr. Gregory House. =)
